RECONSTRUCTIONS OF EUROPEAN SADDLES BEFORE 1530

 

Reconstructions are always based on the consultations with the client. I am  happy to make an optional pattern based on available historical sources. 

I am able to send the exact specifications of the projects that I have already finished and what were the sources.

I encourage you to ask questions regarding the making of other projects. I will try to determine how well can I reproduce the original at a reasonable price

 

All saddles are individually tailor-made for the horse's back, by previously taken measures of the horse and adapting them to the preferences of the rider.

Saddle reconstruction basen on the Boucicaut Master illumination - Paris 1415.
Covered with red leather. Udder saddle there are pillows which are filled with natural wool. 
Saddle tree based on one from "dragon saddle".
Carving in leather filled with gold paint.
Metal fittings made in brass. Buckles and stirrups are tinned.

MEDIEVAL WAR SADDLE

Reconstruction saddle from XIII ilustrations. 
Large saddle pad is made from felt, wool and linen. Saddle cap is made form linen, felt and linen. Under seat there is linen pillow filled mainly wool, which in yhe simple way 
you can remove and filling how you want to.  

Project of saddle tree was prepare to cut on CNC maschine.

Handmade sewing.

Slavic saddle from Schleswig. XII-XIII century.
In oryginal saddle tree was made of bone. On the cantle we can see repeating pattern what indicated cantle was expose. 
Slot for stirrup strap on the right bar is unfinished. That could mean saddle was not finish. 
Saddle is tying to the horse by one strap going under seat pillow. 

Reconstruction I made from: wood, flax, felt, leather and tinned iron. 
Textiles covering I took from "Winchester Bible" 1160-80.

Saddle based on sculpture from Castelvecchio in Verona, Italy. 
Inner construction based on Henry V saddle. 
Saddle tree reinforced with fittings.
On the front outisde pommel there is chain used to hanging weapon (like in oryginal).
Reconstruction made by: felt, wood, linen, wool, leather, colour metals and iron.

On the front and back pommel there are repoussed brass flowers. Saddle covered with black velvet.

Henry v saddle ~ 1422

Reconstruction basen on the artefact from Abbey Museum - London.
Saddle was carry in Henry V funeral procession in 1422. The saddle, which was originally covered with blue/purple velvet, powdered with golden fleur-de-lis.
The reconstruction preserves the original dimensions of the saddle, taking into account the fit of the modern horse. The original has steel stirrup bars, which were most likely used to quickly change the suspension point of the stirrup straps without getting off the horse.
Buckles and stirrups are tinned.
Stirrups based on XV century find from England. 
Saddle tree fitted in 3D and cut in CNC technology.

Saddle reconstruction based on painting by Meister der Pollinger Tafeln - Germany 1444.
Covered with black leather with semi soft seat. Padding filled with wool.  
Saddle tree precisely based on one from "ivory dragon saddles".
Saddle flaps soft and solid. 
Metal fittings made in brass. Every buckles and stirrups are tinned. 
Type of saddle used by wariors and civils.

To make the reconstruction I used front saddle arc discovered on Lativa and iconography from that historical period.
The saddle consists of wooden saddle tree covered with canvas.
Under the saddle there is tied linen pad filled with wool blankets.
On the top there is a woollen pillow and green-blue linen overlay.
The whole is handsewed and all pieces are replaceable.
Tinned stirrups are based on IV type of Świętosławski. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Based on St George figure from Coventry - UK.
Covered with black leather. Pillows under saddle filled with natural wool.
Every buckles and iron stirrups are tinned. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

To make the reconstruction I used miniature from "The Romance of Alexander" ( 1338-44 and 1400). The saddle consists of wooden saddle tree covered with canvas.
Saddle is covedred with natural red leather. 
Every metal pieces are tinned.
Bridle, breastcollar and crupper based on "Hrvojev misal" manuscript (circa 1404).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

To make the reconstruction I used painting from Santa Caterina, Galatina, Italia (1400-1420). The saddle consists of wooden saddle tree covered with canvas. Inside construction based on Henry V saddle (circa 1422). On the top there is a blue velvet overlay and brss fittings.
Caparison have two layers of linen, I based on "Die Deutschenordens Rittern aus Elbinger Arturshof" Elbing.
Bridle based on "Saint George and the Dragon" by Rogier van der Weyden" (1432-1435).
Horse bit (tinned) reconstructed on "John Clark- The Medieval Horse and Its Equipment - 1995".

To make the reconstruction I used artefact saddle discovered on Hungary - Karos. The saddle consists of wooden saddle tree decorated with bronze and repoussed tinned fittings.
Under the saddle there is tied linen pad filled with wool blankets. On the top there is a red linen overlay.
